Mutually exclusive checkboxes

Written by Nirmal Fakir

Mutually exclusive checkboxes allow you to limit a signer to selecting only one option from a group. This ensures accurate responses where only a single choice is valid, improving data consistency and reducing errors.

Requirements

  • Supported document formats: PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint

  • Multiple checkbox fields added to the document

Instructions

Option 1: Limit signers to one selection (Mutually Exclusive)

  1. Insert checkbox fields

    • Add the required checkbox fields to your document.

  2. Select the checkbox group

    • Click and drag to highlight all checkboxes that should be mutually exclusive.

  3. Configure exclusivity

    • In the field menu on the right, tick Only 1 value can be selected in the checkbox group

    • Enter a Checkbox Group Name to link the selected fields

  4. Set as required (optional)

    • Tick Required if a selection must be made

Option 2: Require one or more selections (Multi-select required)

  1. Insert checkbox fields

    • Add the required Tick fields to your document.

    • Assign all checkboxes to the relevant signer.

  2. Select the checkbox group

    • Highlight all checkboxes in the section.

  3. Configure the group

    • Enter a Checkbox Group Name to link the fields

    • Tick Required for all selected checkboxes

    • Do not enable Only 1 value can be selected in the checkbox group

  4. Confirm behavior

    • The help text will update to: “One or more values in the group will be required when signing”

This setup ensures that signers must select at least one option, while still allowing multiple selections where applicable.

Use case:
Ideal for scenarios like source of wealth, where more than one option may apply, but at least one selection is required.

Expected Outcome

Checkboxes behave according to your configuration:

  • Only one option can be selected when mutually exclusive is enabled

  • One or more options must be selected when configured as a required group without exclusivity

This ensures accurate data capture and prevents incomplete responses.

FAQs

Can a signer select more than one option in a mutually exclusive group?
No. Only one checkbox in the group can be selected.

What happens if I don’t assign a checkbox group name?
The fields will not be linked, and multiple selections may still be possible.

Can I require at least one selection without limiting to one option?
Yes. Mark all checkboxes as Required, assign a group name, and do not enable mutual exclusivity.
